Week 4 - Importance of NIC
Week 4 - NICs
We all know the importance of network wiring rooms and making sure that plans are thoroughly thought through, the configuration is custom-made, and making sure the technology and cables are set up properly to organize the room itself. But what about the technologies required to run wireless communications? This is where NICs come in.
What exactly are NICs? Well, NICs are called networking interference cards. These cards are electronic circuit boards that work to make sure that computers and other devices that are able to connect to internet networks are able to do so. NICs themselves provide ethernet ports. These cards expand into 2 other types. There are internal and external cards.
An internal NIC is usually the main option that comes with many desktops and laptops. Internal NICs come with bigger bandwidth options compared to external ones. These cards also provide the option for ethernet and wireless connections. For these reasons, internal NICs are preferred.
External NICs need to be plugged into a USB computer port. These are going to be wireless and do not offer the option for an ethernet connection. The reason why external NICs have lower performance is that the data transfer is based on USB modules.
